Pokorski Motorsports posts pair of top 10s

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 28, 2016 – Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team entered a pair of Midwest Sprint Car Association events last weekend and came away with a pair of top ten A main showings at Manitowoc Speedway and The Plymouth Dirt Track Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25.

On Friday, June 24 the team traveled to Manitowoc Speedway, which is a track close to Pokorski’s heart. The event drew 23 MSA Sprint Cars to the third-mile Manitowoc track, which is set to close at the end of the 2016 racing season in favor of new business development.

Pokorski, who grew up in Manitowoc, got the evening off to a rousing start with a victory in the first Sprint Car heat race. The familiar blue Pokorski Motorsports 2016 Maxim started on the pole and paced every lap of the heat race to lead runner-up Tony Wondra to the finish line by a half straightaway margin.

The heat race victory gave Pokorski the eighth starting spot in the 25-lap Sprint Car A main. After the drop of the green flag, Pokorski found himself locked in a battle for seventh place with Tony Wondra, as Pokorski worked the high groove, while Wondra stayed glued to the bottom of the perfectly manicured track surface.

On lap 10, Justin Miller moved up to challenge Pokorski for the seventh spot. As Miller worked the low groove, Pokorski continued to pound the cushion on the outside of the track. Pokorski eventually cleared Miller and set his sights on Kenjay Fiedler, who was running sixth.

On lap 20, Pokorski used a strong outside move in turn four to take over sixth in the running order. As action heated up over the final five laps, Pokorski dueled with Brandon McMullen for the sixth spot. Eventually, McMullen used the inside lane to pull ahead of the high riding Pokorski, who crossed the finish line in seventh place. Kurt Davis of West Allis went on to post the A main victory from his outside front row starting spot in flag-to-flag fashion.

On Saturday night at The Plymouth Dirt Track, a total of 24 MSA checked into the pit area to do battle. Pokorski started the evening with a solid third place finish after starting fifth in the third Sprint Car heat race. Pokorski followed runner-up Scott Conger and race winner Jim Melis to the finish line in the heat race.

Things got quite wild in the 25-lap Sprint Car main event. After starting eighth, Pokorski was involved in a multi-car pileup on the opening lap of the event when front row starters Kurt Davis and Dannon Tessmer got together in turn two.

During the melee, Pokorski was hit from behind by Jim Melis and the contact resulted in a flat left rear tire and bent shock pin. After retreating to the pit area for repairs during the caution period, Pokorski returned to the track to restart the race in the 16th position.

“Apparently Dannon Tessmer’s throttle stuck and he and Kurt Davis got together,” Pokorski Motorsports Crew Chief Dave Schultz said. “Paul slowed to avoid, but Jim Melis had nowhere to go and got into us. It was a racing deal and totally not intentional, unlike the incident we had last week.”

Pokorski moved of steadily through the field throughout the race to find himself firmly in the top 10 and battling for a top 5 finish as the laps wound down.

Pokorski dueled with Scott Conger and Chris Clayton in the closing laps to eventually salvage a solid sixth place showing. Meanwhile, at the front of the pack Donny Goeden posted his third Plymouth Dirt Track Racing Sprint Car A main victory of the season.

“The car was very good and Paul drove his heart out as he always does to finish sixth,” Schultz said. “It was disappointing that we didn’t get the finish that Paul and car deserved, but we had to play the cards that were dealt to us.”

Pokorski was fairly happy with the performance of the car on both nights.

“Both nights were pretty good,” Pokorski said. “The end result in the features was a seventh and sixth-place finish, which isn’t quite what we wanted. However, the car felt good and we were competitive.”

This weekend the Pokorski Motorsports team will again pull a doubleheader at Manitowoc Speedway on Friday night and The Plymouth Dirt Track on Saturday night.

On Friday night, Pokorski will join the field for the second and final Harbor Town Showdown featuring the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series at Manitowoc Speedway. The race will mark the final 410 Sprint Car race ever at the Manitowoc track. Qualifying is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow at 7 p.m. Manitowoc Speedway is located at 4921 Expo Drive in Manitowoc. For more information, visit www.manitowocspeedway.com

“This upcoming week, we are looking forward to another opportunity to run at Manitowoc,” Pokorski said. “My most memorable race night at Manitowoc was actually in Randy Sippel’s Rent-A-Ride car the first time I drove an MSA car. There was a huge field of cars and we were running fourth in the A man before an engine gremlin knocked us out with about two to go.

“I have a lot of other smaller good memories and some bad memories of racing in Manitowoc,” he said. “We look forward to taking this opportunity to make a few more laps and create a few more memories before the track goes away.”

Then on Saturday night, the Pokorski Motorsports team will return to The Plymouth Dirt Track for another Plymouth Dirt Track Racing weekly event. Racing is scheduled to being at 6 p.m. Sheboygan County Fair Park is location at 229 Fairview Drive in Plymouth.
